The department of physical therapy and rehabilitation, at BMMSH, Ranchi, is a world class unit. Fitted with latest equipment, it offers physical rehabilitation services with emphasis on integrated patient-oriented care through an interdisciplinary team approach. The department offers holistic care utilizing a comprehensive range of services.
The Department provides highly specialized physical rehabilitation programmes for patients with disabilities arising from certain medical conditions or injuries. This treatment has application in all disciplines of modern medicine – Orthopaedics, Neurology, Cardiothoracic, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Sports Medicine, etc.
Our trained and highly specialised team is responsible for providing pre-operative and post-operative physiotherapeutic intervention to out-patient and in-patients. The Centre’s comprehensive facilities are also available for fitness training – both for the purpose of exercise and rehabilitation.

In-patient Therapy and Rehabilitation Programme:
The Physiotherapist works closely with members of the clinical team and Consultants for achieving the best possible results. The programme includes, intense therapy sessions with each referred patient. The team’s main focus is reducing the period of hospitalisation and optimising the patients’ functional capabilities.
The In-Patient services are rendered from the Intensive Care Unit / ITU CTVS, HDU, PCU, Private and General Wards.
Specialised Therapy:
Manual Therapy: for individuals with musculo-skeletal imbalance, joint and muscle pain. Manual manipulation/mobilisation, mayofascial release to facilitate movements & improve functions.
Sports Therapy: service caters to sports personnel suffering from various sustained injuries and post operative sports rehabilitation under the guidance of trained & experienced therapists.
Vestibular Rehabilitation: This service caters to individuals suffering from vertigo (head reeling during movement), disequilibrium and gait/walking disturbances. Set of exercises are offered to improve adaptive functions of the vestibular system.
Dry Needling Therapy: Dry needling is a safe technique applied by Trained/certified Physiotherapist for the treatment of pain & movement impairments. Therapist follows evidence-based guidelines, recommended “Point” location and dosages for the treatment specific.
The primary aim is to relieve muscle pain, cramps and flexibility. Therapist inserts sterilized, thin, stainless steel filiform needles into mayofasial trigger points. These are the tight knots in the muscles. The needles are practically dry with no liquid or medicine and nothing is injected.
Post Surgical Therapy: Rehabilitation therapy after surgeries like Total Knee Replacement (TKR), Total Hip joint replacement (THR), post fracture joint surgeries are handled by skilled therapist.
Post Brain & Spine surgeries and Cardiac & Abdominal surgeries, intense rehab programme are offered to our patients to regain normalcy.
Antenatal & Post Natal Fitness Therapy: Fitness therapy sessions for pregnant ladies aim to improve maternal & newborn health. Promotion of healthy behaviours, recognition of danger signs, education on hygiene, warmth, breastfeeding techniques and incontinence management.
Elderly Safety Clinic: Aging is inevitable, which leads to irreversible decline of organ function that occurs over time even in the absence of injury, illness, environmental risks, or poor lifestyle of the individual. People aged above 65 are prone to falls, often resulting in fractures of hip, knee, ankle, wrist, elbow. Recovery usually requires long-term hospital stay. Falls can sometimes be life threatening.
Elderly Safety Clinic or Bujurg Suraksha Clinic offers safety tips, fitness & balance exercises to improve quality of life. Happy aging for senior citizens!
Domiciliary Services:
This service caters to those individuals who require intervention/treatment but are unable to come physically to the hospital, or for those patients who require ongoing therapeutic follow up session post various surgeries. The allocated therapist visits individual’s home/residence & services are rendered as per requirements/advise at discharge.
